A Cork-based charity which helps some of the world’s poorest children has announced the appointment of RTÉ sports broadcaster Jacqui Hurley as its newest ambassador.

The Hope Foundation was founded in 1999 by Maureen Forrest to assist children living in dire poverty on the streets and in the slums of Kolkata in India, helping their families and communities, while aiding overseas development and tackling humanitarian issues.

The charity, which now has offices in Cork, Dublin, Britain, the United States, and India, provides support to 58 projects including education, primary healthcare, child protection, vocational training and drugs rehabilitation.

As part of its work, Hope also works with local Indian NGOs to rescue thousands of children from the streets and slums of Kolkata.

Announcing Ms Hurley as its newest ambassador, Maureen Forrest, founding president of the Hope Foundation, said the appointment further strengthened the charity's commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.

“We are thrilled to have Jacqui join us as a new ambassador,” she said.

“Jacqui and her family have been friends of Hope for years and her passion and commitment will greatly support our mission and enhance our efforts in Kolkata.”

Ms Forrest added that Ms Hurley would bring to the charity her deep passion for social impact and her dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable children, “embracing her role as ambassador with both enthusiasm and commitment”.

Ms Hurley, a Cork native who played basketball for Ireland and camogie for Cork, made history in 2009 by becoming, at the age of 25, the first female presenter of RTÉ’s Sunday Sport in the show’s then 40-year history.

Ms Hurley said she was delighted to be appointed Hope’s newest ambassador.

“Having been familiar with Hope’s work for many years, I’m delighted to be a part of the organisation and look forward to supporting their efforts in improving the lives of street-connected and slum-dwelling communities in Kolkata, India,” she said.
