Former Lord Mayor and current Independent Cllr Kieran McCarthy wishes to remind sporting clubs in Douglas of the call for Cork City Council’s longstanding support for sporting clubs and organisations.

A funding pot of €500,000 in Sports Capital Grants is available for 2025.

The grants scheme provides funding for projects that are directly related to enhancing facilities or the purchase of equipment, assisting local voluntary sporting organisations and clubs in developing and enhancing sports and physical recreation throughout the city.

Cllr McCarthy noted: “Over the years, the Sports Capital Grants scheme has supported all types of clubs and organisations, from football and rowing to athletics and taekwondo, and many more.

“There were approximately 100 applications received for the 2024 scheme.

“This consistent financial support offered by the council greatly assists the clubs and delivers benefits to the wider community”.

“The capital grants are not intended as an alternative to other sources of funding, but they complement other schemes, helping to bolster local contributions or assisting with funding where certain works are not covered by other grant schemes.

“They allow for minor capital work towards enhancement of premises, pitches, etc., as well as funding non-personal sports equipment that will be used for at least five years,” concluded Cllr McCarthy.

Sporting clubs and organisations can find further information at www.corkcity.ie Queries can be directed to the Sports Section of Cork City Council at sports@corkcity.ie or call (021) 4925515. Clubs are advised to apply early for this grants.

Horgan: Utilise RUS 066 signs for Broadale crossing

Labour Party Councillor Peter Horgan has sought for Cork City Council to utilise the new RUS 066 pedestrian crossing signs at the long called for pedestrian crossing section between Broadale and Maryborough Ridge, saying that it is a shift away from the traditional flashing amber lights.

“We need this pedestrian crossing installed now, not in five to eight years time,” said Cllr Horgan.

“This new style of pedestrian crossing - essentially an upgraded courtesy crossing - should not be blockaded because of BusConnects. The NTA has informed me that there is nothing stopping Cork City Council progressing its own crossing ahead of BusConnects and this RUS066 crossing would work as an interim crossing to protect all vulnerable pedestrians, young and old.

“I have sought for officials to copy the use of this crossing like in Dublin and the section on Maryborough Hill is perfect in my opinion for that.”
