Toxicology tests are expected to prove key in determining the cause of death of a Polish man who was found unresponsive on a sofa at a duplex apartment in Midleton, Co Cork yesterday afternoon.
The 66-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene at his home in Ard na Corann in Broomfield West in the town yesterday afternoon. Gardaí had been called to the property at around 4pm yesterday. Paramedics also attended at the scene.
The man’s wife, who is also in her sixties, was transferred by ambulance to Cork University Hospital (CUH) after she was found to be unwell. Her condition is not life threatening.
It is understood the couple may have become ill after drinking home made spirits. Empty bottles will be analysed in a bid to establish what the man and woman drank. Foul play is not a factor in the case.
The body of the man was removed from the apartment yesterday evening for a postmortem examination at CUH. A technical examination has also been carried out at the property.
The Coroner was notified yesterday and an inquest will be held in due course. The death of the man is currently defined as being "unexplained." Laboratory tests will be critical in determining the precise cause of death.
Meanwhile, Gardaí yesterday said they were investigating the matter.
"Shortly after 4pm, Gardaí responded to a report of an incident at a residential property in Broomfield West, Midleton where an adult male (understood to be in his 60s) was found unresponsive. He was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later," a spokesperson said.
"An adult female was treated at the scene and transported by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.
"The scene is preserved for forensic examination, the local Coroner has been notified and a post-mortem examination by the State Pathologist will be arranged.
"The man's death is currently unexplained and the post-mortem results will assist gardaí in determining the course of their investigations."
