Council to undertake reviews at several East Cork locations following road safety concerns

County council engineers have acknowledged a number of road safety concerns in Cobh and Carrigtwohill and are to undertake reviews to address them.

At a meeting of Cobh Municipal District Council, Independent Ireland councillor Ger Curley asked that a safety review be carried out on Ballyleary, Tay Rd, and Cow Cross in the town.

He said it is dangerous at the moment and will only get worse if not addressed as more houses are to be built in these areas.

Both Labour councillor Cathal Rasmussen and Fianna Fáil councillor Dominic Finn supported his motion.

In a statement, council engineers said they would carry out a review of the road and monitor the Cow Cross junction.

However, they added that any necessary maintenance or remedial works identified through the review process will be prioritised and programmed “subject to available resources and funding”.

Mr Curley also highlighted dangers at Ballymore junction, adjacent to the High Chaparral pub, and engineers said they would look into that as well.

Mr Rasmussen asked for possible traffic control measures on the R624 (Fota Rd) at the junction near Bramley Lodge restaurant “which is a cause of huge delays to motorists, visitors, and workers in the area”.

Fine Gael councillor Anthony Barry said traffic often backs up from there to the N25 interchange.

He said employment at the nearby Merck pharmachem plant had grown significantly in recent years and this had generated even more traffic in the area.
