Former Irish Navy captain Marie Gleeson received a standing ovation at a recent Kinsale Lions Club event for an inspiring speech she delivered on resilience and supporting pregnancy loss research.
The event, spearheaded by the Kinsale Lions Club, was held in the Shane Fitzsimons Theatre at Kinsale Community School, and saw a sold out crowd gather to support the vital work of the Pregnancy Loss Research Group (PLRG) at Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH), led by Professor Keelin O’Donoghue.
Drawing from her extensive military leadership experience, Ms Gleeson delivered a deeply moving and impactful speech on resilience, decision making, and team performance in challenging environments.
She shared her personal story of overcoming adversity following the loss of her baby boy, captivating the audience with her insights on teamwork, strength, and the importance of community solidarity.
President of the Kinsale Lions Club, Cormac Fitzgerald FCPA FCA, described the speech as “truly inspiring.”
“Her ability to connect her personal experiences with her leadership expertise to illuminate the path to resilience is remarkable.
“It was an honour to have her share her wisdom with our community, all in support of the crucial work being done by Professor O’Donoghue and the PLRG.”
The funds raised from the event will directly benefit the PLRG, enabling them to continue providing invaluable support and advancing research in this sensitive area.
The evening’s programme, moderated by Ann-Marie O’Sullivan, founder and CEO of AM O’Sullivan PR, also included a tribute to key community figures, including Anne Fitzsimons and her family, whose leadership within the Lions Club has left a lasting legacy.
The venue was named in memory of Ms Fitzsimons’ late son, and provided a poignant setting for the evening.
The event also highlighted the work of the Kinsale Lions Club, which aims to expand its impact through strategic partnerships and philanthropic initiatives.
