Cork College of FET has announced two new sustainability initiatives aimed at making their Bishopstown campus greener and more eco-friendly.

Cork College of FET-Bishopstown, a campus of Cork Education and Training Board, runs a Green-Campus Programme which encourages a partnership approach to environmental education, management, and action.

The programme primarily aims to ensure that members of a campus community can engage in a meaningful way to enhance sustainability on campus.

Two initiatives

The first of two new initiatives focuses on collecting returnable bottles and cans to support Cork University Hospital's Children's Charity.

This idea was born from the college’s proactive Campus Green Committee, who noticed the accumulation of bottles and cans around the campus.

They reached out to the Three Johnnies at Cork University Hospital, a group of hospital porters who used bottle deposit return scheme to raise thousands of euro for CUH, who were thrilled to collaborate.

Now, the university has three designated bins around the campus where students and staff can deposit their bottles and cans. In just one month, they've raised €70 for the cause.

Circular economy

The second initiative is the introduction of 2Go Cups in their canteen, promoting the principles of the circular economy. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the number of disposable cups used on campus.

Also spearheaded by the Green Committee, these reusable cups can be purchased for a €2 deposit and returned at any participating location.

Valerie Cowman, Campus Manager, said: “It's really important to us to increase the sustainability of our campus and to embrace the principles of the circular economy.

“As a designated Centre of Excellence for Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) and Retrofit education, and with our suite of Green Skills Micro-qualifications, we are leaders in sustainability education.

“It's crucial for us to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Congratulations to the Green Committee for leading these initiatives. I look forward to seeing more sustainable projects in the future.”
