A German registered super trawler has been detained off the south west coast for alleged fishing offences.

The ‘Helen Mary’ was detained by the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) vessel, 'Ocean Protector', off the south west coast early today.

The super trawler was escorted by the EFCA vessel to the deep water berth at Tivoli where EFCA officers were being assisted by gardaí and the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA).

The ‘Helen Mary’ is almost 30 years old and is close to 120 metres in length.

The EFCA says that they detected suspected infringements of European fisheries legislation involving a sea-fishing vessel in the Irish exclusive economic zone.

"The Joint Deployment Plans framework provides the legal basis where the relationships of joint deployment of inspections assets/inspectors are set and are applicable to all assets of the concerned Member States and EFCA.

"When operating in EU waters, the EFCA inspectors always have Union inspectors from member states onboard and they are the leading inspectors."

The vessel is expected to remain berthed in Cork harbour for a number of days.
