Cork jockey in intensive care following fall at Thurles race meeting

The two time Cheltenham winner in 2023 was initially trated on the track, before he was transferred to Cork University Hospital by air ambulance. The meeting was abandoned following the incident.
Cork jockey Michael O’Sullivan was airlifted to hospital following a fall at a race meeting in Thurles on Thursday.
He was riding Wee Charlie for Gerard O'Leary and was one of three fallers at the final fence in the two mile Racing Again February 20 Handicap Chase.

On Friday morning, Dr Jennifer Pugh IHRB Chief Medical Officer said in a statement:
“Michael is in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital being treated for his injuries sustained at Thurles yesterday and is receiving the best medical care.
“Michael’s family wish to express their gratitude for all the well wishes.” An earlier statement published on social media by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board on Thursday shortly after the incident said:
“Michael O'Sullivan was treated by the medical team on track at Thurles Racecourse prior to the air ambulance arriving. Due to the ongoing medical situation at the time, the Raceday Stewards made the decision to abandon the remainder of the card. Michael was stabilised prior to being transferred by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital.”
A statement from Thurles Racecourse on X said: “All our thoughts and prayers are with Mikey O' Sullivan and his family tonight. We express our gratitude to the amazing medical team who tended to Mikey on course.” Mr O'Sullivan shot to prominence in 2023 when winning the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham aboard Marine Nationale and also winning the Fred Winter with Jazzy Matty.
