Gardaí responded to a call about a 49-year-old man wearing a bandana and carrying a knife on Lapp’s Quay in Cork and today he was jailed for a total of eleven months for this and other crimes.
Jerry Foley, 49, of no fixed address pleaded guilty to being drunk and a danger and having a knife in his possession on October 11 2024.
Sergeant Dave Delea said that the gardaí responded to the call from a member of the public about the drunken man carrying a knife at nine o’clock that night.
As well as admitting that crime Mr Foley, who has 110 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to carrying out three different shoplifting offences – all carried out in Homesense on Grand Parade in November 2024.
Additionally, he stole a suit from Mick Murphy Menswear on North Main Street, Cork, on December 5 2024.
Jerry Foley stole jewellery from TK Maxx on Cornmarket Street on the same day.
And in a third incident on the same date he was engaging in threatening behaviour by smashing a bottle close to outdoor seating on Paul Street.
On December 1 2024 he was verbally abusive to gardaí off High Street in Cork.
Eddie Burke solicitor said the accused had huge difficulties in his past, adding: “Every time he struggles to get himself up, something happens and he falls down again.”
Judge Mary Dorgan imposed several sentences making up a total of eleven months.
