Cork Camogie has warned fans to beware of fake streaming links for matches, as a city councillor has said “it’s a shame” that more camogie games are not televised.

Following a busy weekend for Cork minor and U16 camogie teams, the organisation has warned that it will always advertise official streams from its verified accounts on social media.

Scammers have been known to create accounts with the same name and profile picture as official accounts, then post links purported to be live streams of matches, often in the comment sections of popular posts so that spam links will be seen by more people and anyone engaging with the post will get a notification.

These accounts sharing fake links have become more and more frequent, with older or vulnerable people sometimes falling victim to scams.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: “We want to remind all Cork camogie supporters to be cautious when clicking on links claiming to stream our matches.

“Scammers often replicate official accounts and post misleading links in the comments section. Cork Camogie will always announce official streaming details from our verified accounts. Do not click on links in the comments, even if they appear to be from reputable sources like the Camogie Association, Munster Camogie, or Clubber.”

Sinn Féin councillor Michelle Gould told The Echo: “On the back of an extremely successful weekend where the Cork minor, U16A, and U16B teams all won their respective Munster finals, it is imperative that we keep Cork camogie in the limelight.

“It’s a shame that the games are not televised, and I would strongly urge people not to click on links in the comments [on social media]. The Camogie Association will always advertise if and where games are live-streamed, and more than likely it will be on their YouTube channel.”

Ms Gould, secretary of St Vincent’s Camogie Club and manager of the UCC senior B camogie team, said: “Having said that, nothing beats being there in person and I’ve no doubt we will have a great season for Cork Camogie.

“I would encourage everyone to go and support, especially the seniors, who are on a bid for three in a row.”
