Man charged with murder of Paula Canty remanded in custody

A man charged with the murder of young mother Paula Canty in Mallow Co. Cork has been further remanded in custody.
Joseph Butler, 42, of The Belfry, Bridewell Lane, Mallow, Co Cork appeared by video link from Cork Prison before Judge Colm Roberts at Mallow District Court.
Court presenter Sergeant Majella O’Sullivan asked Judge Roberts to amend the charge sheet in relation to Mr Butler in order to reflect his correct date of birth.
She told the court that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) were still awaited and said that it was the State’s application to further remand Mr Butler in custody.
Defence solicitor David O’Meara he would agree to a further remand in custody for his client to appear before the court again by video link on January 28, 2025.
Judge Roberts said that he appreciated investigations were ongoing but the State should endeavour to give Mr Butler “some kind of timeframe” at the next hearing as to when to expect directions from the DPP.
Mr Butler is charged with the murder of 31-year-old mother of two Paula Canty whose body was discovered in an apartment at The Belfry, Bridewell Lane, Mallow on January 3.
Ms Canty’s body showed evidence of violent assault.
