A young man facing sentence for drug-dealing seems to be living in “cloud cuckoo land”, a District Court judge said.
Judge Mary Dorgan made this comment when she was dealing with the case against 27-year-old Seán Hussey of O’Rahilly Row, Fermoy, Co Cork, at Cork District Court.
Solicitor Frank Buttimer said a guilty plea had been indicated by the accused man.
The admission was to charges of possession of MDMA drugs and having them for the purpose of sale or supply to others.
The background to the incident was that on August 6, 2024, a warrant was executed at Belfort, Rossa Ave, Bishopstown, where the accused was living at the time.
MDMA, better known as ecstasy, valued €1,230, was located in the bedroom along with €1,545 in cash. He made admissions to gardaí following the seizure.
After reading the probation report on the accused, Judge Dorgan said: “He seems to know exactly what to say to the probation service, but is doing nothing about his addictions.
“This gentleman seems to be in cloud cuckoo land about his addictions.
“He is facing a jail sentence unless he can produce three supervised urine samples.”
Solicitor Frank Buttimer said the defendant was very candid about matters.
“He told me he is still smoking cannabis and is now on his fourth day without cannabis,” said the solicitor.
Judge Dorgan said that she would not finalise sentencing until the urinalysis was completed. Mr Buttimer said that, in light of recent consumption of cannabis, Mr Hussey would test positive for the drug if urinalysis was done soon.
In those circumstances, the judge adjourned the matter until February 20 and directed that the first test would be done by then. It is anticipated that the matter will be further adjourned thereafter.
