Met Éireann predicting cold snap will continue up to the weekend

Met Éireann has said daytime temperatures will struggle to get above freezing at times over the coming days. 

Ireland is set to face further cold conditions over the coming days, with Met Éireann further extending the status yellow low temperature and ice warning until early on Friday morning. 

The the national forecaster has said that there will be very cold nights ahead while the warning is in place, with frost, ice and lying snow widespread. It said temperatures will struggle to get above freezing during daytime hours.

Met Éireann is forecasting that wintry showers will bring a further accumulation of snow, providing potentially hazardous travelling conditions, poor visibility and travel disruption.

Bitterly cold

In the Cork and wider Munster region today will remain will be bitterly cold today with widespread frost and lying snow.

There will be sunshine and scattered showers of rain and sleet, with highest temperatures generally ranging between 1 to 5 degrees, but staying below freezing in sheltered areas and over snow-fields. Northwesterly winds will increase moderate to fresh and gusty.

Tonight will see clear spells and scattered sleet and snow showers. There will be widespread frost and ice, with lowest temperatures of 0 to -4 degrees in moderate west to northwest winds.

Tuesday January 7 is is expected to be another very cold day with some spells of sunshine. Frost and ice is likely to linger in some areas throughout the day, with highest temperatures ranging from 1 to 5 degrees.

Lingering fog

The cold outlook will continue on Wednesday, with areas of ice and freezing fog lingering in some areas across the day. 

Where the fog does clear there will be spells of sunshine, with afternoon temperatures fluctuating between +3 and -3 degrees. 

Thursday will be a mainly dry chilly day with sunshine. However frost and freezing fog may linger in southern parts. Again, maximum afternoon temperatures are expected to fluctuate between +5 and -2 degrees. 

Friday is likely to see some respite from the cold weather, with temperatures rising to between 3 and 6 degrees. While it will feel somewhat warmer, there will be outbreaks of rain in the morning that will spread eastwards and become lighter as the day progresses.
