The company tasked with rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has announced that residents on two islands off the Cork coast can now pre-order high-speed fibre broadband connection.

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) has said that with connections set to go live in late summer of next year, 250 premises on Bere Island, and 18 on Dursey Island, will have access to high-speed broadband on the network.

As the biggest investment in rural Ireland since electrification, Cork county will receive €314m of government investment under the National Broadband Plan.

In County Cork, 82,000 premises are included in the State’s intervention area, which will see NBI deliver minimum speeds of 500 megabits per second to homes, businesses, farms, and schools.

Works have been completed in other parts of Cork and 35,483 premises can now pre-order or order high-speed, reliable broadband across the county, with 12,157 connections made so far.

“We are proud to deliver high-speed broadband infrastructure to residents of Bere and Dursey Islands,” said National Broadband Ireland CEO Peter Henrick.

“These communities will have access to the same quality, speeds, and reliability that our network offers to anyone living on the mainland.”
