A Cork weather station experienced its wettest November day in 33 years last month while another had its rainiest in 18 years.

That’s according to Met Éireann’s recently published weather statement for November 2024 which said that two stations had over 50mm of rainfall on Saturday 23.

These were Cork Airport, with 52.4mm, its wettest November day since 1991, and Roches Point, with 55.6mm, which marked its wettest November day since 2006.

Elsewhere, the station at Knock Airport in Mayo, Oak Park in Carlow, and Finner in Donegal, had their wettest November day on record on Saturday 23 during Storm Bert. However, Met Éireann said the majority of monthly rainfall totals across the country were below their 1981-2010 Long-Term Average (LTA).

Average

On average, the national forecaster said November 2024 was “mild, dry for most, and dull”.

A cold Arctic maritime airmass did move south over the country on November 19, causing precipitation to turn wintry in places but the fourth week of the month was dominated by storm Bert, a deep Atlantic depression named by Met Éireann, which brought the wettest and windiest period of the month, marking the end of the cold spell.

All mean air temperatures across the country were above their LTA for the month.

Mean temperatures for the month ranged from 7.4°C (1.2°C above its LTA) at Knock Airport to 10.9°C (1.4°C above its LTA) at Sherkin Island. All stations reported ground frost during the month.

The number of days with ground frost ranged from four days at both Mace Head in Galway and Roches Point to 15 days at Markree in Sligo.
