Scoil Mhuire Kanturk student Eabha Sheahan has been awarded top marks overall in the country for the 2024 higher level Leaving Certificate technology exam.

Eabha received her award at the Engineering and Technology Teachers Association conference in the Hume Hall of the Atlantic Technological University, Sligo, at the weekend.

Eabha said: “For as long as I can remember I have had an interest in all things STEM-related, but I also really love designing and being creative.

“It was always hard to find subject areas where I could combine these interests, but technology was the perfect mix of these two skills for me.

“I still remember my first technology class in Scoil Mhuire in first year and coming out of it knowing that this subject was for me. I could not have progressed so well in the subject without the continuous support from my teacher, Mr Crotty.

“While I loved all aspects of the subject, my favourite part of technology was the design process. I really enjoyed coming up with different ideas for my project and eventually seeing all of the parts come together in the end.

“Learning all about things like circuits, programming and CAD during the Leaving Certificate technology course has been a great advantage for me so far, and I cannot wait to see what else I can learn in the years to come.

“I think the approach Mr Crotty has to teaching technology has been a huge advantage to both myself and my fellow classmates, which resulted in us receiving high results, and there has been a high uptake of students going on to study various engineering courses.

“I would like to thank Mr Crotty and all the staff at Scoil Mhuire for their dedication to us pupils down through the years.”

Mr Crotty said: “From the beginning, Eabha has demonstrated outstanding technical expertise and a deep commitment to pushing the boundaries. This award celebrates Eabha’s talent, passion, dedication and excellent work ethic.”

Principal Denis Keating expressed his delight at Eabha’s achievement.

“It takes a very special student and the right learning environment to reach this level of success. Eabha is a very unassuming student who quietly and diligently went about her work.

“Eabha’s achievement is the third such success for the school over the past five years,” Mr Keating added.
