Science Week is coming to Cork with a free event at the Marina Market this month.
The event, focused on exploring the wonders of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (Steam), will take place on Saturday, November 16, from 11am to 4pm.
Families and curious minds of all ages are encouraged to attend the Science at the Marina event, with a range of activities, showcases, art displays, and discussions set to take place.
Science at the Marina is a community-focused event bringing together leading scientists and innovators to engage the public in cutting-edge research and advancements in science and technology.
Top scientists from Teagasc, University College Cork, and Tyndall National Institute and representatives from leading Research Ireland centres, including APC Microbiome Ireland, iCRAG, Insight, IPIC, VistaMilk, and MaREI will be present on the day.
Mysteries
From the mysteries of the human microbiome to groundbreaking advances in artificial intelligence, light engineering, virtual reality, and sustainable food and agriculture, there will be something for everyone to explore.
Highlights on the day include an interactive science exhibit where guests will take a journey through a giant inflatable gut and a talk with VistaMilk’s Donagh Berry on the quirks of DNA and how genetic variations influence everything from family resemblance to animal traits.
There will also be a student art gallery showcasing the artistic talents of local schoolchildren.
Talks will be held on the ancient origins of food processing, the journey of food through your digestive system, the diverse plant life of Irish grasslands and their crucial role in sustainable milk and meat production, and how biophotonics, a non-invasive light technology, can detect illness in babies.
