All About Cork: School life celebrated at Ashton annual prize day event
Aurelius Weber-Shevchenko, Junior Student of the Year, and Eamon Cronin, An Corn Mhic Uistin winner for love and respect of the Irish language and culture, at Ashton School annual Prize Day ceremony.
Ashton School held their annual prize day ceremony on Thursday, October 24.
The event provides the school with the opportunity to celebrate school life, academic success and sporting excellence. It was attended by members of the board of management, school staff, students, parents and invited guests.
In his speech, school principal Adrian Landen acknowledged the contribution of the board, teachers, students, parents and ancillary staff in making Ashton the success that it is.

He said the annual prize day ceremony gives us the opportunity to formally acknowledge and celebrate students’ achievements.
He also reminded students that another purpose of the event was to inspire those who were not awarded prizes this year to set new personal goals for themselves and to aim for future success.
The ceremony included a musical interlude by the Ashton school choir, accompanied by Ashton’s music students, under the direction of Dr Mary G. O’Brien.

Student reports of the academic year 2023/2024 were given by Millie O’Mahony, Freya Fitzgerald, Patricia Gulca and Conor Langley, together with head students Zoe Fahy and Michael Turner.
Sarah Chambers and David Hrihorov, another two of Ashton’s head students, congratulated the award winners and gave sound advice to younger students on setting and meeting personal goals whether in school, sport or the arts.

Awards were presented by Mr Landen, deputy principal Richard Lester, year heads and teachers.
The Rochelle Trophy, awarded for excellent results in the Junior Cycle examinations, was presented jointly to Ruadh Stapleton and Kornél Bagi.
The Des Deasy Memorial Trophy for Engineering was awarded to Callum Kirwan and the Cox Perpetual Trophy for European Languages was presented to Zach Coakley.

Brian Puchalak received the Burke Trophy for Technical Subjects, while the Corn Mhic Uistin Award for Irish language and culture went to Eamon Cronin.
Nicola Sullivan was presented with both the Corn an Amhairginigh award for written Irish and the Shereen Gokul Memorial Trophy for Girls Hockey.

James Taylor was awarded the Andrew Chambers Memorial Trophy for Boys Hockey. Laura Barry was presented with the Ashton School Players Award for her contribution to the performing arts.
The Citizenship Award for Senior Student of the Year was presented to Abigail Carlaw. Aurelius Weber-Shevchenko received the Citizenship Award for Junior Student of the Year.
