A Cork sports club has celebrated its 125th birthday by raising over €5,000 for a homeless shelter which provides emergency accommodation for women and children.
Founded in 1899, Sunday’s Well Boating and Tennis Club is currently celebrating its 125th anniversary.
The club recently hosted its Mary Collins Tennis Tournament, an annual event which this year generated €5,535 for Edel House, Good Shepherd Cork’s shelter for women and children who are homeless.
This is the second year in a row that Edel House has benefited from proceeds raised at the event, which was this year sponsored by Alive Coaching and dairy co-operative Ornua.
In addition to its funding contribution, Ornua has also donated mobile phones to Good Shepherd Cork, and will be facilitating volunteering for its employees with the local charity in the run-up to the busy Christmas period.
Greatly appreciated
Speaking at the cheque handover at Edel House, Sr Jane Murphy of Good Shepherd Cork said the money raised was greatly appreciated by the charity.
“On behalf of the management and staff at Edel House, we are delighted to be the chosen charity again this year, and we are extremely grateful to Sunday’s Well Boating and Tennis Club for hosting this fantastic fundraising event."
“We are particularly grateful to the sponsors who have generously supported our work this year, including Alive Coaching and Ornua.”
Tom Hennessy of Alive Coaching said his company was happy to have played its part in helping Edel House.
“The funds raised will be used to address the root causes of homelessness and social exclusion, and aim to break the cycle of homelessness through generations, which is why we are proud to sponsor the event again this year,” he said.
Jenifer Tangney, group corporate social responsibility manager at Ornua, said the company was “proud to support the vital work of Good Shepherd Cork”.
