Gardaí are attempting to trace a gang of men in a stolen car who chased and rammed a young delivery driver in the Mahon/Beaumont area of Cork overnight on Thursday leaving him with serious injuries to his legs.

The road rage incident took place at around midnight.

Paramedics and several units of the Cork City Fire Brigade attended at the scene in Beaumont after receiving reports that the gang had chased and rammed the 23-year-old delivery driver.

It is understood the Brazilian man was pursued by the gang from Mahon to Beaumont in the southside of the city.

They rammed into the man at Woodvale Road in Beaumont before fleeing the scene. The delivery driver was travelling on a Honda 125 motorbike.

Householders who heard the impact of the ramming emerged from their properties and raised the alarm.

They found the man lying trapped under his bike. He had sustained a serious compound fracture to one of his legs.

The man was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

He was conscious but in a considerable amount of pain.

The damaged bike was removed from the scene.

It is due to be forensically examined.

The area where the ramming occurred will also be technically examined.

It is believed the man informed gardaí that he had had an interaction with the persons in the stolen car in the Mahon area leading them to follow him to Beaumont in a road rage type of incident.

The stolen car was a Skoda Kodiaq, which was robbed from a property near Blarney 10 days ago.

An alert was put out in connection with the gang who subsequently rammed a garda car at 2am on Friday morning on the Old Mallow Road on Cork’s northside.

Two gardaí received minor injuries in the incident.

It is understood the stolen car subsequently headed in the direction of north Cork.

Gardaí have asked that anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour in the areas of Mahon, Beaumont and Old Mallow Road in Cork on Thursday night or in the early hours of yesterday morning to call Anglesea St Garda Station on 021-4522000.
