Teeth whitening products and Liverpool FC jerseys were among the many items stolen by a Cork man with a heroin addiction that has ravaged his life.

Teeth whitening products and Liverpool FC jerseys were among the many items stolen by a Cork man with a heroin addiction that has ravaged his life.

38-year-old David O’Sullivan of St Vincent’s hostel, Anglesea Street, Cork, was jailed for eight months today for a litany of shoplifting offences where he stole items to sell so that he could buy more heroin.

Diarmuid Kelleher solicitor said on behalf of David O’Sullivan: “It is not like wanting another cigarette.

“The craving is such that you have to get it, it is an illness. He was stealing items to sell just to get the next heroin dose.

“He has a very bad addiction to Diamorphine/heroin. It has blighted his life.

“There is no gainsaying the losses to all of these shopkeepers and all of these places.

“Unfortunately, it is the ravages of being an addicted person. Opioid addiction ravages the body.”

Judge Mary Dorgan acknowledged that this was a very sad story to see how this man’s life was blighted.

However, she said that had to be balanced against the reality of ongoing criminality.

“As I have said, this is not a victimless crime and shoplifting does impact not just on the owners but also on the staff,” Judge Dorgan said.

Sergeant John Kelleher outlined the latest offences – all committed this year - by David O’Sullivan who already had 26 previous theft convictions, 23 for burglary and six for handling stolen property.

On January 22 he stole two Liverpool jerseys valued €170 at Elverys on Oliver Plunkett St.

The same day he stole two Berghaus jackets valued €520 from Lifestyle Sports on Patrick St.

On March 4 at Tommy Hilfiger on Opera Lane he stole clothing valued at €1,069.

The following day he stole €359 worth of clothing at 45 Oliver Plunkett St.

On March 22 he stole €300 in clothing at Lifestyle Sports.

On April 18 he stole a bottle of aftershave valued €90 from the Chemist Warehouse on Cornmarket St.

Two days later he was caught handling €175 worth of clothing stolen from French Connection.

On July 16 at JD Sports on Patrick St he stole €75 worth of clothing.

And most recently on September 16 he stole teeth whitening products valued at €239 from Boots on Half Moon St.
