Baltimore lifeboat called for medical evacuation from Heir Island

The Baltimore all-weather lifeboat was called to Heir Island on Tuesday morning to assist in the medical evacuation of a resident.

A West Cork volunteer lifeboat was called to assist a Heir Island resident who was in need of medical assistance following a request from the Irish Coast Guard early on Tuesday morning. 

The Balitmore all-weather lifeboat arrived at Heir Island at 8.06am on Tuesday morning and a Casualty Care crewmember carried out an assessment was brought on board the lifeboat.  The lifeboat left Heir Island at 8.35am and was back in Baltimore by 8.48am when the casualty was handed over the care of an HSE Ambulance crew onshore. 

RNLI volunteer lifeboat spokesperson Kate Callanan said that the lifeboat frequently carried out similar operations for people living on the islands off shore from the port town. 

"Baltimore RNLI regularly provides medevacs to people living on or visiting the islands near Baltimore," said Ms Callanan. "Please remember if you find yourself in a medical emergency whilst on an island call 999 or 112."

There were seven volunteer crew onboard the lifeboat during today's operation and they included: Coxswain Aidan Bushe, Mechanic Cathal Cottrell and crew members Stuart Musgrave, Pat Collins, Brendan Cottrell, Micheal Cottrell and Colin Whooley. Conditions during the call out were calm within the harbour area with a north easterly force 4 wind and good visibility.
