Nominations sought for Joe Sheehan Community Award

Cathedral Credit Union on Shandon Street are seeking nominations from the public for their Joe Sheehan Community Award for 2024. The award is open to anybody living in the North Cathedral, Middle Parish, Sacred Heart, Sunday’s Well, St Mary’s, Popes Quay and Blarney Street communities.

Manager, Eoin Newman said: “We are looking for ordinary people who, by their voluntary efforts, have made a difference in either a community, sporting, educational or indeed any field of endeavour. As a community and voluntary organisation, we understand and appreciate the often thankless efforts many people put into community based organisations”.

Nomination forms, available in the Credit Union office, must be returned to Cathedral Credit Union on or before October 19. Or email your nomination to info@cathedralcu.ie.

Bygone Blarney Street

The Shandon Area History group invite you to hear the story of ‘Bygone Blarney Street’.

This is a trip down Blarney Street — Ireland’s longest street. Or is it?! The talk goes through the centuries, looking at what people were doing and how life changed.

The speaker is Richard Forrest, chairperson of the Blarney & District Historical Society Coffa House, Church St. It takes place on October 9 at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

‘Sugar’ at Cork Arts Theatre

Opening on November 19, at Cork Arts Theatre, is Sugar by Michael Patric. In the play, Danyl Sweetnam describes his last days as an Irish Sugar employee.

Cork Arts Theatre said: “It’s 2006 and Danyl is finding the going tough. His marriage is falling apart, his job is in jeopardy and then there’s a family bereavement. Rather than letting it all defeat him though, Danyl decides to laugh his way through it. Contrary to the stereotypical Irish male who finds it difficult to talk about his problems, Danyl will tell it all to anyone, anywhere, anytime. His fear, his grief, his family and even his sex life.

“He has a deep love and respect for his work colleagues. They have taught him the value of laughing at the serious stuff. He will tell us with pride how they fought against the company to win a fair redundancy settlement in the Labour Court. Indeed, this fight mirrors his own personal fight with tragedy and loss.

“If you can keep smiling at all, you have hope.”

The show is written and performed by Michael Patric and directed by Geoff Gould. It runs from November 19 to 23.

See corkartstheatre.com for ticket details.
