An “urgently needed” school traffic warden has been designated to a Gaelscoil in Ballyphehane, a move described as “welcome”.

Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire received confirmation from Cork City Council that a school traffic warden has been “earmarked” for Gaelscoil an Teaghlaigh Naofa.

The appointment timeframe has yet to be confirmed.

Mr Ó Laoghaire said: “I’m delighted that the appointment of a school warden has been progressed now.

“The school community has been fighting for this for years. It is urgently needed, given the traffic pressures and safety concerns,” he said.

“Because of the lack of pedestrian crossings and the fact that there are so many cars parked at the shops and so on, it is a very dangerous area. It is very clear that there has been a need for more, in terms of safety.

“I have been in contact with the council this week and I understand that they are awaiting council engineers doing an assessment of the location very shortly, in advance of the warden being deployed, and I expect it will be in place in the coming weeks,” he added.

The Cork South Central TD was informed by the council that the appointment timeframe would depend on the requirements of the assessment and that he would be kept updated.

Mr Ó Laoghaire praised the school community for their efforts to secure a school traffic warden, saying: “Congratulations to the school community on the campaign. There are other issues that need to be addressed, such as the pedestrian crossings, both at Tory Top Road and Friars Walk, as well as increased signage, but this is a welcome step forward.”
