A huge night of entertainment is coming to the heart of the northside.

Shine A Light Suicide & Mental Health Awareness have the return of Make Some Noise Cork for its sixth consecutive year.

This highly anticipated event will take place on Saturday, October 5, at the Smurfit Theatre, Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Shandon, starting at 7:30pm. Doors will open at 7pm.

Myles Gaffney will headline the event once again. Myles, alongside Liam Mullaney, was instrumental in the inception of Make Some Noise Cork back in 2018. Dots Tobin and Roger Ryan of August Walk will make a welcome return to the stage, while Andrew Fletcher, a rising star in the Cork music scene, will also perform. Andrew recently played Live at the Marquee with Glen Hansard.

The Kabin Crew, currently the hottest ticket in Cork, will also be back, bringing their boundless energy and talent to the event. They have been lighting up stages all over the country and abroad, and delighting audiences everywhere including the entire nation on last Friday night's Late Late Show.

The primary goal of Make Some Noise Cork is to raise awareness about positive mental health and to direct people to local and national services and resources. Over the past six years, the event has grown significantly, helping many individuals by providing information and low-cost counselling services.

The event aims to continue fostering a supportive environment where people can reach out and support one another.

Make Some Noise Cork is also a major fundraising event for Shine A Light Suicide & Mental Health Awareness. The funds raised are crucial for continuing to assist people in crisis. We encourage the public to support this event, which also serves as a platform for showcasing the abundant local talent in Cork.

The event is in collaboration with Cork Kerry Healthcare, our sponsors and we thank them for their support.

Tickets are €10. See www.firkincrane.ie

Popular heritage event Celebrating Cork Past returns

Celebrating Cork Past 2024 returns this year and Northside historian Richard T Cooke is encouraging local groups to get involved.

The annual event takes place this year on Friday November 22 from 2pm to 5pm in the County Hall, Carrigrohane Road.

Mr Cook told The Echo: “The afternoon will see a celebration of the fantastic work of Cork’s heritage and historical groups and societies in 2024 — city and county — with a presentation highlighting many key projects and achievements and there will also be an update from the Celebrating Cork Past committee regarding recent heritage trajectories from the local to national level including various initiatives and schemes, etc.

“The Celebrating Cork Past committee endeavours to recognise and honour the wonderful heritage work being undertaken by groups throughout the city and county, and there will be a number of awards on the day in recognition of this work.

“With this in mind, you are cordially invited to attend on the day, whether you are a local heritage/historical group/society or simply someone with a keen interest in the heritage of Cork, city and county combined.” To indicate your interest in participating on the day, please email Mr Cooke, the committee chairperson, at (richardtcooke@yahoo.com as well as the Cork County Heritage Office, Conor Nelligan (corkheritage@corkcoco.ie) by Friday, October 11.

Details of projects being entered in this year’s awards, and which will be included in the Celebrating Cork Past 2024 Presentation, must also be submitted by this date, to the aforementioned email addresses. Projects can be of a varied nature, from local historical journals and series of events to local exhibitions, physical projects or video documentaries/podcasts. Best projects will be announced on the day.

Mr Cook added: “Celebrating Cork Past 2024 promises to be a most memorable occasion for heritage groups in the city and county to meet one another and highlight to one and all, what they are about, what pride they take in their local place and all the heritage it encompasses.”

The event is supported by Cork County Council, Cork City Council and Cork Lions Club. See celebratingcorkpast.com.

10x10 minute deadline

There are just three weeks to go until the submission deadline for Cork Arts Theatre’s 10x10 minute play event.

The venue said: “Please note that, due to the very large numbers of entries that we have received in recent years, we are only accepting submissions for this event from writers resident in Ireland and the UK.

“Apologies to our writer friends in the rest of the world but the sheer number of plays received last year made our readers’ task a mammoth one. We hope you understand.”

Plays must be submitted no later than Sunday, October 6 and should be sent as a Word document or PDF to: theatre@corkartstheatre.com with the subject line 10x10 Submission 2024.

The performances of the selected plays will run from Tuesday, December 3 to Saturday, December 7.
