Gardaí arrested a man and seized a firearm in Mallow in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A man in his 30s is due to appear in court in Fermoy this morning in connection with the seizure of a firearm in North Cork early yesterday morning.

At approximately 1.10am on Thursday morning Gardaí operating a checkpoint stopped a vehicle in Mallow.

A shotgun and ammunition was located and seized.

Following the seizure a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda Station in the Cork Division.

"The operation involved the Mallow Detective Unit, Mallow Drugs Unit and Mallow Roads Policing Unit. The seized items will be forwarded to the Garda Ballistics Unit for further analysis.

This morning, Gardaí said the man arrested in connection with their investigation has since been charged.

 “He is expected to appear before Fermoy District Court at 10.30am today, Friday, September 13,” said a garda spokesperson.

“Investigations are ongoing.”
