Investigation launched following stabbing of teacher after robbery from French students in Cork city centre

Following a meal at a city centre restaurant the group of 22 students, aged between 12 and 14, were confronted by a couple. A female pushed one of the girls in the group and took her phone and ran off towards Merchant’s Quay.

A Garda investigation has been launched following an incident on Patrick Street in Cork on Tuesday night in which a phone was stolen from a teenage girl walking with a group of French students and, following a subsequent chase, one of the teachers with the group was stabbed with an implement believed to have been a screwdriver.

Following a meal at a city centre restaurant the group of 22 students, aged between 12 and 14, were confronted by a couple. A female pushed one of the girls in the group and took her phone and ran off towards Merchant’s Quay.

She was chased by a male teacher in the group and when he caught up with the woman when he was attacked from behind by the woman’s male companion. He suffered several puncture wounds to his back during the attack. The implement used is believed to have been a screwdriver.

The incident was reported to Gardaí at Anglesea Street Garda Station and a search was carried out around Merchant’s Quay and the Bus Station at Parnell Place.

The man and woman involved in the incident are believed by Gardaí to be in their mid to late 20s and are understood to have been wearing dark clothing at the time of the attack.

Gardaí would like to speak anyone who was in the St. Patrick Street and Merchant’s Quay area between 10-10.30pm on Tuesday night.
