All About Cork: Douglas GAA Club tee-up for annual golf classic

Douglas Golf Club

It has been a busy few weeks at Douglas GAA Club, both on and off the pitch.

Last weekend they launched their new coffee dock, appropriately called ‘The Dougout’, which is now open every Saturday offering great coffee and treats.

The club is also gearing up for their annual golf classic fundraise at Douglas Golf Club. It will tee-off on Thursday, June 27 and conclude on Friday, June 28.

This is always a great day in the club calendar and is booking out quickly. Friday is almost gone and Thursday is booking up fast. To book a tee time or become a tee box sponsor, contact a club member.

As part of the golf classic this year they are running a student golf competition. This will be available to secondary and college students, over-14, at off peak times 8-9am on both days. The charge is €100 per team of four.

Healthy club: As part of Douglas GAA Healthy Club Initiative, they ran a family Yoga session with Hazel from The Yoga Tree Community, on Lehane Motors Street League finals day, which was a great success. The Healthy Club committee also organised a First Aid Course last Saturday covering topics such as first aid with a particular emphasis on sports related injuries, CPR, overview of defibrillator, concussion handling with particular emphasis on GAA guidelines.

Last weekend saw the Lehane Motors Street Leagues Hurling and Camogie finals on Saturday, with fun for all the family.

A full day of camogie and hurling matches for all ages, with the skills on display the future is bright for the club.

The day is always a great celebration of sport and community at the club, with huge crowds attending across the day. There was something for everyone, with yoga, balloon tying, face painting, popup shops, food stalls, and the baristas at the newly launched coffee dock didn't have a moment's rest.

As always the pipe band parade through the village was a highlight enjoyed by all the players.

The club would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved, including all the organisers, mentors, players, parents, gardaí, and street leagues sponsors Lehane Motors.

Pipe band lead parade

The Carrigaline Pipe Band led the Douglas GAA Street Leagues parade through the streets of the village to the GAA pitch on Saturday morning last.

A feature of the day was that brothers Paddy and Johnny O’Connell who have between them a combined 140 years of drumming with the band were playing.

The band’s next engagement will be to lead the procession to Rónóg’s Well on the eve of the feast of Saint John on Sunday, June 23, at 7 pm.

Band practice continues every Thursday in the band room. New members are always welcome. Enquiries to Paddy O’Connell 087 968 5833.

Men’s Shed courtesy visit

Twelve members of the Macroom Men’s Shed paid a courtesy visit to Carrigaline Men’s Shed on Wednesday, June 5.

The Macroom men visited Camden Fort Meagher in the morning and called to Carrigaline in the afternoon.

The Men’s Shed walking group enjoyed the walk through the woodland and open spaces of Novartis on Monday morning last. They meet again this Monday at 11am and have plans to go on a different walk. The Men’s Shed choir who continue to practice are making a return visit to the day care centre in Kilgarvan, County Kerry, tomorrow, where they have been invited to sing for the locals.

Later they plan to visit Kenmare and Sneem and have organised a meal on the homeward journey.

The kitchen is the busiest part of the Carrigaline Men’s Shed where the men gather and read the paper and enjoy each other’s company and have a cup of tea.

Meanwhile a variety of activities continue every day in the wood workshop, the engineering workshop and the poly tunnel.

Visitors and new members are always welcome, enquiries to Roger Morrissey 087 220 3547.

Tidy Towns working hard

Well done to the combined efforts of Cork County Council and Carrigaline Tidy Towns the town is looking its best for this year’s national Tidy Towns competition.

Tidy Towns volunteers are out every day of the week, planting, weeding, watering and litter picking.

This week a class of volunteers from Holy Well National School turned up and helped with light litter picking.

The colourful floral displays in gardens and planters around the town are spectacular, the roundabouts are looking particularly attractive. An appeal to all residents and visitors to keep up the good work during the judging period.

New members and volunteers are always welcome, call to headquarters Saturday or Tuesday at 9.30am or on Wednesday evening at 7pm.
