THOUSANDS of people were expected to take to pathways across the city and county this morning for the 2024 Darkness Into Light 5km walk.
The event, which is organised by Pieta and supported by Electric Ireland, aims to raise funds for life-saving supporting services for those in suicidal distress and those who have been bereaved through suicide.
In Cork city, crowds set off from the grounds of University College Cork (UCC) at 4.15am, with many others taking part in an event on the northside that was due to depart from Glen Rovers GAA Club.
Walks also took place in Blarney, Glanmire, and Ballincollig.
Outside of the city, Darkness Into Light 5km walks and runs were scheduled right across Cork county, including in Adrigole, Ballineen/Enniskeane, Ballyvourney, Bandon, Bantry, Castletownbere, Clonakilty, Cobh, Drinagh, Dunmanway, Farran, Fermoy, Inchigeelagh, Kanturk, Kinsale, Macroom, Mallow, Midleton, Millstreet, Mitchelstown, Schull, Sherkin Island, Skibbereen, Watergrasshill and Youghal.
Overall, 100,000 people from 230 locations across four continents were expected to take part today.
