THE completion of a €1.2m upgrade project at Fermoy Swimming Pool has been announced by Cork County Council.

The completed works include the installation of 170 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, a new insulated roof, upgraded heating systems including the installation of two heat pumps, new air-handling units, replacement of the hot water gas boiler for showers, triple-glazed windows and doors, as well as the external painting of the complex.

The project was supported by a grant from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to the sum of €271,000.

“The enhanced facilities at Fermoy Swimming Pool will benefit the entire community, providing a safe and energy-efficient environment for swimmers of all ages,” the Mayor of County Cork Frank O’Flynn said, welcoming the upgrade.

“The upgraded facilities will cater to many groups, including schools, clubs, and wellness groups, and will continue to serve as a hub for community activities year-round.

“These energy saving interventions will ensure that the pool continues to serve the population of Fermoy and its surrounding hinterland for many more generations,” Mr O’Flynn added.

Chief executive of Cork County Council, Valerie O’Sullivan, said: “The upgrades at Fermoy Swimming Pool align with the Fermoy Town Development Plan, while also meeting the specific energy requirements of a sports complex — improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in line with national decarbonisation goals.

“We are proud to offer these upgraded facilities that will serve the residents of Fermoy and surrounding areas for years to come.”

Constructed in the 1970s and later redeveloped in 1996, the Fermoy Swimming Pool serves more than 150,000 customers annually, and provides swimming lessons to more than 950 children on a weekly basis.

The facility is used by many schools and sports clubs, and is home to the Fermoy Swimming Club.

Pool staff also operate a Swimming Learning Programme for adults and children.
