Motorist caught driving 142km/h in 100 zone

A motorist in Co Wicklow was caught speeding at 147 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

This happened on the N11, Newcastle, as part of the Garda Roads Policing Operation taking place throughout the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend.

So far, 680 drivers have been detected for speeding offences during the first 24 hours of the operation.

Other high speeds include a motorist driving 104 km/h in an 80km/hr zone on Drogheda Road, Gormanstown, Co. Meath.

82 km/h in a 50km/hr zone on the R600, Belgooly, Co. Cork was also recorded, while a driver was speeding at 81 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in Bundoran, Co. Donegal.

During this period, nearly 90 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

21 drivers have also been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

42 people have died so far on Irish roads this year.
