Cork woman allegedly spat at gardaí and is accused of carrying stolen property

A 35-year-old Cork woman allegedly tried to spit at gardaí several times when they found her carrying hundreds of euro worth of property stolen from shops and she verbally abused them as paedophiles.

Sergeant Aisling Murphy outlined the allegations today against Margaret Deasy of Cork Simon Community at Cork District Court.

The alleged offences relate to March 30 at Paul Street, Cork.

“Gardaí received a report of a woman shouting and being aggressive on Paul Street. Gardaí arrived at the scene and spoke to Margaret Deasy.

“It is alleged there was a smell of intoxicating liquor coming from her. Upon speaking to her, she became aggressive shouting at gardaí, “F*** off, ye paedophiles.

“She also attempted to spit at them several times. At 4.10pm she was arrested and conveyed to Bridewell garda station,” Sgt Murphy said.

In the Bridewell she allegedly had stolen property in her possession, namely €288 of cosmetics from Boots on Half Moon Street, €168 worth of clothing from Next at Opera Lane, €133 of cosmetics from Murphy’s pharmacy, North Main Street, €64 of clothing from H&M on Opera Lane, €22 of alcohol from Centra on North Main Street and €20 of clothing from the Irish Cancer Society on Princes Street.

Judge Mary Dorgan accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case at Cork District Court.

Defence solicitor Joseph Cuddigan asked for an adjournment of the case until May 8 so that consideration could be given to whether there will be a plea of guilty or if the charges will be contested.

Ms Deasy faces several counts of handling stolen property, engaging in threatening behaviour and being drunk and a danger. She is also accused of causing criminal damage where it is alleged that she was seen on CCTV damaging flower pots on March 30.
