Uisce Éireann says it has completed repair works and restored water supply for customers in parts of Cork City following a significant outage yesterday.

Crews worked to divert water from parts of the city after a burst to a watermain on Meade Street on Sunday, in a move which left customers in several parts of the city without water.

A company spokesperson said that water services teams spent the day reconfiguring and repairing the network with the view to limiting the impact and restoring the supply to homes and businesses.

Discoloured water

It said that the repair works are now completed, but there may be an increase in discoloured water at customers' taps today.

"Following any significant activity on the water network, we usually see increased reports of sediment becoming dislodged from the old cast iron pipes, resulting in discoloured water at customers taps.

"Areas potentially impacted include: Blackrock Road, Boreenmanna Road, Ballinlough Road, Douglas Road, South Douglas Road, Capwell Road, Summer Hill South, Quaker Road, High Street, Infirmary Road, Tower Street, Barrack Street, and surrounding areas," the spokesperson said.

"If your tap water is discoloured, running the tap for up to 20 minutes will usually restore water to a clear colour. Water is safe to drink once the water is running clear. Uisce Éireann continues to advise customers not to drink discoloured water. If your tap water is still discoloured after running it for 20 minutes, please call the Uisce Éireann customer care team so reactive flushing can be carried out.

"Ongoing testing and analysis of the water supply continues, in conjunction with extensive monitoring across Cork City’s distribution network. This ensures the water is compliant with drinking water regulations and is safe to drink. The results of these ongoing tests are shared with the EPA and the HSE," the spokesperson added.

Meade Street closed

Sean Lynch, Operations Lead for Uisce Éireann in Cork City said: “We understand the inconvenience that unplanned outages can have, and we thank customers for their support over the last 24 hours. Water Service Teams did a fantastic job yesterday and I also want to thank them for their dedication.”

Meade Street remains closed while a road reinstatement assessment takes place today.

Local access will be maintained.

"Uisce Éireann wants to thank the local residents around Meade Street for their patience during these essential repair works," the spokesperson said.

The Uisce Éireann customer care helpline is available on 1800 278 278 and updates are also issued via X (formerly Twitter) @IWCare.
