THE residents of a large estate on the southside of the city have remembered their deceased former neighbours with a memorial tree.

Deerpark Residents’ Association planted an oak tree, on the main green in the estate. A plinth and plaque were unveiled by Independent councillor Mick Finn, who was deputising for the lord mayor. Opened in 1990, Deerpark is one of the largest of the newer estates in the area and its residents’ association has worked hard to maintain the green areas and lighting.

“Like the small acorns from which the oak tree will grow, the association has expanded over the years and has done a great job maintaining a large estate for its residents,” Mr Finn said.

“Planting an oak tree, which holds a great place in Celtic lore, symbolising truth, courage, and wisdom, is a powerful reminder of all those who lived in Deerpark, but who have since passed on, and will provide a visible reminder of the role they played in the evolution of the estate.

“People like the late Pat Harrington, who was chair of the association and who brought his expertise and love for nature from his role at UCC, were remembered, as well as young Jack O’Sullivan, who passed away following a tragic swimming accident in Passage last year.”

Resident and treasurer of the association, Tony Ryan, recited a poignant poem in memory of all those who have passed away over the last 30 years, while committee member Stephen Scully played music. Teas and coffees were provided by some of the residents. “I hope this will become an annual event, where families like the Ryans, the Scannells, the Brackens, the Magees, the O’Briens, and all those who have lost loved ones over the years, can come together in remembrance and continue to make connections with new neighbours who move into Deerpark,” said Mr Finn.
