A CANADIAN naval vessel docked in Cork city was the subject of a demonstration by anti-war protesters on Monday.

The Royal Canadian Navy frigate, the HMCS Charlottetown, had been participating in Nato exercises in the Atlantic Ocean, and has been docked for refuelling and supplies at Horgan’s Quay since Friday last.

A joint protest was held on the quay yesterday by members of Cork’s Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Cork Neutrality League.

Martin Shiel, co-chair of the Cork Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said they were protesting against the Canadian government, led by Justin Trudeau, for its position what Mr Shiel called “Israel’s onslaught in Gaza”.

Joe Moore, a spokesperson for the Cork Neutrality League, echoed Mr Shiel’s comments, saying that the joint protest was also against the Irish Government for granting permission for a Nato vessel to dock in Ire-land.

“Our neutrality has yet again been compromised by the Government.

“This Canadian warship should not have been granted permission to enter Cork,” Mr Moore said.
