New Year's Eve is expected to be wet and windy in Cork with a yellow wind warning in place.

Met Éireann is warning that westerly winds veering northwesterly will be strong and gusty at times with potential impacts difficult travelling conditions, waves overtopping and risks from loose debris.

The warning, which came into effect last night, is expected to stay in place until 5pm today.

It also impacts Clare, Kerry and Limerick.

The forecaster said that conditions will remain unsettled in the earlier part of the day with heavy and thundery showers and a chance of hail.

The showers are expected to gradually clear away later this afternoon and evening with some long clear spells developing.

Met Éireann said that the fresh to strong westerly winds will slowly ease overnight too with temperatures dropping down to 1 to 3 degrees.
