ALMOST 60 prisoners were on temporary release from Cork Prison yesterday.

Figures published by the Irish Prison Service (IPS) show that, on December 20, 59 prisoners were on temporary release from the prison. 

The data also revealed that Cork Prison is operating above capacity, with 330 people in custody at the Rathmore Rd facility which has bed capacity for 296 inmates.

The latest figures come as the IPS confirmed that nationally, 139 prisoners will be granted varying periods of temporary release this Christmas under the Criminal Justice Act 1960.

IPS said the number represents 3% of the prison population.

It said many of the prisoners being released are “nearing the end of their sentences and the overriding concern when considering the applications is the safety of the public”.

“In addition to compassionate and humane considerations, other criteria taken into account include the nature and gravity of the offence, length of sentence served to date, prior record on temporary release, behaviour while in custody and previous criminal history,” IPS added.

The periods of release vary from a few hours up to seven nights.

IPS stressed that all releases are subject to stringent conditions and any prisoner who breaks these conditions may be arrested and returned immediately to prison by the Gardaí.

“The sensitivities of victims are an issue that has also been taken into account.

“Additional specific conditions will also apply in relation to victim liaison cases.

“Furthermore, all registered victims with the Irish Prison Service victim liaison service will be informed in the cases where prisoners are receiving Christmas Temporary Release,” IPS added.

This year’s figure represents more than a 7% increase on last year, when 129 prisoners were granted temporary release for Christmas.

A breakdown of the total number of prisoners to be released from the various prisons over Christmas is not available.
