CORK County Council has published proposals for an enhanced public realm and a dedicated pedestrian and cycle route in the Monkstown area.

The local authority has opened a public consultation on the Proposed Monkstown Active Travel Link and Public Realm Enhancement, Monkstown and is now seeking views from the public on the plans.

The scheme involves the construction of a dedicated pedestrian and cycle route on the eastern side of the R610 road.

The council is also proposing the development of an enhanced public realm to include new street furniture and improved public lighting, an ‘on-street spill-out areas for local businesses’, cycle parking, street trees, pollinator planting and other ancillary works.

Independent councillor Marcia D’Alton welcomed the proposed enhancements.

“Efforts are being made to keep bus stops and bus shelters very accessible, maintain a turning space for the bus and minimise the loss of parking spaces. It also has a focus on creating a dedicated central place for the sailing club in the village and to use the opportunity to introduce soft planting. It seems like we have been listened to and I’m very appreciative of that”.

She emphasised the importance of having other voices included in the proposal.

“I want the people of Monkstown to engage with this as it’s a big change for the village centre. It’s also a good change. A lot of people are welcoming the proposal. Others expressed concerns and the remainder don’t want it. To all of those people, I would say please make a submission because we want your voice”.

Details of the proposed development will be available for inspection for a period of four weeks online at www.corkcoco.ie, at Lobby, Floor 1, County Hall, Cork or at Cork County Council Area Engineer’s Offices in Carrigaline during office opening hours until Friday, November 24.

Submissions and observations with respect to the proposed developments can be made by emailing trafficandtransport@corkcoco.ie or by writing to to Senior Engineer, Cork County Council, Traffic and Transportation, Floor 3, County Hall, Cork, on or before Friday, December 8.
