Flooding reported in parts of Cork city and county

Heavy rainfall combined with tidal conditions led to flooding in several parts of Cork on Friday.
Motorists were met with challenging conditions with flooding on Wandesford Quay and Lavitt Quay in Cork city earlier this evening.
Other areas reported to have been flooded included the Curraheen Road, the R588 Clonakilty to Shannonvale Road, the Strand Road in Carrigaline, the Bailick Road in Midleton and water overflowed at the Sawmill Street junction with Rutland Street in the city centre.
It comes as Cork City Council has advised all those travelling into the city centre this weekend for the jazz festival to plan their journeys and to allow additional time for travel due to expected tidal flooding.

City Council said that the October bank holiday weekend coincides with the highest astronomical tides this year with some flooding expected around low-lying quays in the city including South Terrace, Union Quay, Morrisons’ Island, Wandesford Quay, Lavitt’s Quay and South Mall.
A spokesperson for Cork City Council said that a number of road closures and lane restrictions will be necessary pver the weekend.
“Road users are asked to plan their journeys and to travel with caution and follow diversional signage.
“Our crews are on standby and will be working hard to ensure that the jazz weekend is as enjoyable as possible for all coming into the city centre to enjoy this year’s offering,” the council spokesperson said.
Cork County Council has also warned the public to be on alert.
The local authority said that conditions meant there would be a risk of coastal flooding in some areas of the county over the coming days.
