‘It’s brilliant for the community’: Northside park to get a boost this Christmas with the installation of Christmas lights

A MUCH-LOVED park on the northside of the city is set to shine brightly this Christmas, with Cork City Council confirming it will install lights on a prominent tree at the local amenity.
The idea was put forward by Sinn Féin councillor Kenneth Collins who contacted David Joyce, director of services in the council’s roads and environment operations directorate, requesting the installation of Christmas lights on a large tree in Gerry O'Sullivan Park this year.
“Gerry O'Sullivan Park holds a special place in the hearts of many residents, and during the Christmas season, it becomes a gathering spot for families and friends,” Mr Collins said.
The North-West ward councillor has now received confirmation that Christmas lights will be put up around the requested tree.
“I can confirm that having investigated this matter Cork City Council will be in a position to install Christmas lights on this tree for Christmas 2023,” he was informed by Mr Joyce.
The lights due to be installed will be battery operated, Mr Joyce said, as there is “no accessible power” at the location.
Speaking to following the confirmation, Mr Collins said the lights will be a boost to the local community this Christmas.
“It’s a beautiful, beautiful park within the heart of Gurranabraher/Churchfield area,” he said.
“I asked and it came up trumps. It’s brilliant for the community.”
