Search continues in Cork city after incident on River Lee
Gardaí in Anglesea Street confirm that they were alerted to an incident on St. Patrick's Bridge, Cork last night at approximately 10.30pm.
A SEARCH has continued this morning for a person who reportedly entered the River Lee last night, after a long operation including several agencies.
Gardaí in Anglesea Street confirmed that they were alerted to an incident on St. Patrick's Bridge, Cork last night at approximately 10.30pm.
Reports say that a person entered the water, and a search of the River Lee was conducted with the assistance of Coast Guard and Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 117.
Gardaí, Ambulance, Cork City Fire Brigade, the Coast Guard and The Cork City Missing Persons Search and Recovery team remained on the scene until the early hours of the morning.
The helicopter was visible in several areas as it circled around several times before the search was called off for the night at around 2am.
The search continued for several hours in the Status Orange weather warning, with heavy rainfall and flooding in the river due to Storm Babet.
The authorities reported that the search had been unsuccessful but would continue at first light, and The Gardaí told this morning that their search has now resumed this morning with the assistance of Mallow Search and Rescue.
Several people also reported seeing lasers being pointed at the rescue helicopter, with several people saying on social media that they could see green beams of light.
It was confirmed this morning that at least one person was shining a green laser pointer at the helicopter last night.
A spokesperson from the Gardaí told The Echo: “Gardaí in Anglesea Street responded to reports of an incident involving a search and rescue helicopter in the early hours of 18th October 2023.
“Proactive patrols were immediately conducted in the Cork City centre area. Enquiries are ongoing.”
James Joy, a Labour Local Area representative for Cork North West condemned it, saying: “Absolutely disgusted.
“Apart from the danger that this poses, the pure heartlessness of interfering with a search & rescue operation makes me sick to my stomach.”
