Mother-of-seven who was banned from driving took a chance and was caught driving without insurance

A mother-of-seven who was banned from driving took a chance and was caught driving without insurance for the ninth time faced the prospect of a jail term at Cork District Court.

Aisling Lawrence who is originally from Tralee had been disqualified from driving when she got behind the wheel of relative’s car and drove it.

Judge Olann Kelleher was told that she took a chance and drove to a chemist to pick up medication for the relative.

Frank Buttimer, solicitor, said: “She is well aware she is at risk today.” 

Judge Kelleher imposed a five-month suspended jail term. It was suspended on condition that she commits no offences in the next two years.

“If she breaks the law in the next two years there isn’t a judge in the country who wouldn’t send her to jail for five months,” Judge Kelleher said.

Because of extent of her previous convictions for the same offence the judge also gave her a 15-year driving ban.

Aisling Lawrence of Willowbank View, Upper Fairhill, Cork, was stopped by Garda Darragh Dineen at 9pm on July 22 driving without insurance.

“At first she gave a false name. This was checked by gardaí and found to be false. She then gave another name. This also proved to be a false name. It was only when she was taken to Gurranabraher garda station that she gave her correct details,” Sergeant Gearóid Davis said.
