THE sight of works resuming on Bandon's long-awaited flood relief works has been greeted with a sigh of relief in the town.

Works have re-started after a contractual issue between the contractor, Will Bros Ltd, and the OPW was resolved last week.

Activity had stalled on the €11m project for three weeks, but full works have now resumed.

Local senator Tim Lombard confirmed that the dredging of the river will help ease immediate flood concerns while the overall scheme progresses.

“There was exceptional fear, in Bandon, that the project would be stalled and have to be re-tendered. This is one of the biggest projects that the OPW has,” he said.

Public representatives had criticised the OPW for failing to give them up-to-date information on the works and the precise nature of the dispute was never made clear.
