Gardaí raid Glanmire house following the attempted robbery of a bookies
Gardaí in Glanmire are investigating the attempted robbery of a bookmakers at Crestfield, Glanmire at approximately 6.30pm on Saturday.

Gardai conducted a raid in Cork this morning in connection with the robbery at the bookmakers in Glanmire which was thwarted by a Cork man in his eighties.

Three armed and masked men burst into the Bar One Racing bookmakers at the Hazelwood Centre in Glanmire at around 6pm on Saturday evening.

Two of the raiders were carrying hammers while the third man was carrying what appears to be a shotgun.

While two of the customers willingly did not resist the robbery, 83-year-old great-grandfather Denis O’Connor went to the aid of the staff member and fought the raiders head on.

He and the manager of the bookmakers, Tim Murphy, managed to fight the raiders off, ensuring they ran from the premises empty-handed.

A statement from gardaí said:“As part of the ongoing investigation into a robbery at a bookmakers in Glanmire, Co Cork on the 15th September 2018, Gardaí have carried out a number of searches in Cork and Waterford.

“A number of items have been seized as part of the investigation and no arrests have been made.”

Armed garda support units and at least six garda vehicles were seen at an estate in Glanmire this morning.

Gardai from Mayfield and Glanmire were involved in the operation which got underway before 7am and was still underway at around 9am.
