Heffernan’s to reopen as Lee Travel takes it over

Heffernan’s Travel, which has been taken over by Lee Travel and reopens tomorrow.

HEFFERNAN’S Travel is to reopen tomorrow under the Lee Travel umbrella after it closed suddenly earlier this month.

The Pembroke Street travel agency shut its doors after entering liquidation two weeks ago but has now been taken over by former rival firm Lee Travel following negotiations with liquidators, staff, and creditors.

The move will see all 14 staff keeping their jobs under the new management, while still operating under the Heffernan’s Travel brand.

Speaking following the acquisition announcement, Declan O’Connell, owner of Lee Travel, said that it would be business as usual on Pembroke Street.

“Heffernan’s Travel has maintained a great reputation over the course of almost a century, with wonderful staff across the retail, corporate and wedding sectors, so I am delighted to be able to keep this entity going.

“While the company now operates under the Lee Travel umbrella, it will retain the well-known Heffernan’s name and I am hopeful that this new chapter indicates a prosperous future and that the brand will experience a new lease of life as a result,” he said.

He also praised the staff for their support and understanding during the negotiation process.

“I cannot thank the Heffernan’s staff enough for their efforts and cooperation these past few weeks in the face of stress and uncertainty. I look forward to forging a new working relationship with such a dedicated team and I’m eager to welcome both new and familiar customers back through the doors of Heffernan’s Travel,” he said.

One of Cork’s longest-running businesses, Heffernan’s Travel has been operating for 95 years, having first opened its doors in 1923.

The 14 staff members that were employed by Heffernan’s at the time of liquidation will retain their roles under Lee Travel management

Lee Travel, a licensed and bonded travel agent that was established in 1975, currently runs offices across Cork city and county, with bases in Princes Street, Paul Street, Ballincollig, Midleton, and Youghal.
