Bandon student Caoimhe Hurley has launched her chocolate fudge cake into Aldi stores nationwide.
The 15-year-old impressed judges with her baking skills and took home the winning title of the fifth National Junior Baking Competition last year.
The competition is sponsored by Aldi and is held in association with Foróige and the National Ploughing Championships.
Caoimhe’s chocolate fudge cake will be stocked in all 142 Aldi stores nationwide from today and will retail at €2.69.
Caoimhe, who is a member of Castlelack Foróige Club, also won €1,000 bursary fund for her winning cake.
Speaking on her win and the launch of her cake into Aldi stores, Caoimhe said:
"I have been baking from a very early age so when I got the opportunity to enter the competition I was more than happy to participate but I didn’t think for a minute that I would win. I remember the moment I won I think I went into shock because everyone else in the competition was really good too.
"It took me a long time and lots of experimenting to develop a recipe for the perfect chocolate fudge cake but I was eventually really happy with the end result. I also got to design the packaging.
"It was really exciting to go the bakery in Mayo to taste my cake, approve it and see the actual packaging I designed, I was thrilled with the final product. When my cake was launched at the end of December 2019 I was really proud to see it on the shelves.
"It was quite a long process but I had loads of support from my friends and family throughout the eight months. Thanks Aldi and Castlelack Foróige for giving me this amazing opportunity," she said.
The National Junior Baking Competition consists of three different stages, county level, regional level, and national level.
A winner from locally organised competitions in each county is chosen to go forward to regional level where four regional finals in the south, west, east and midlands of the country take place.
Two winners from each region qualify to compete in the semi-finals at the National Ploughing Championships. The contestants placed first and second in each heat qualify for the final.
Last year’s winner Ava Pierce from Galway won over the judges with her lemon drizzle cake which was also sold in Aldi stores.
The competition has been running since 2017.
