A Cork woman, described as a “guardian angel”, has been named the Dovida Munster Caregiver of the Year 2026.
Dawn O’Farrell from Fermoy, who has worked as a caregiver for more than three years, was nominated for the award by her clients and colleagues from Dovida’s Cork North office.
The award was presented to Ms O’Farrell at a special ceremony recently, which celebrated compassion, dedication, and excellence in care.
Receiving the award, Ms O’Farrell said it was “such an honour” to be recognised.
“I started this job after my dad passed away, and we saw the amazing first-hand care he got here in town,” said Ms O’Farrell.
“It’s the small things that matter so much to people.
“I am very lucky to work with the colleagues and clients I have. It is a privilege to work as a caregiver.”
Competition judge, Mary Kennedy said Ms O’Farrell has shown “extraordinary professionalism, calmness, and compassion from her very first day in care”.
“Over the past three years, Dawn has become known for building deep trust with clients and their families,” said Ms Kennedy.
“Supporting people with a wide range of needs, she brings patience, empathy, reassurance, and dignity to every interaction.
“For families, knowing someone they trust is walking through the door brings enormous peace of mind.
“Dawn embodies the very best of care and is a truly deserving recipient of this award.”
Philomena Coleman, a client of Ms O’Farrell’s said she is “absolutely brilliant”.
“She’s a great friend, very caring, kind, and loyal,” said Ms Coleman.
“She’s my guardian angel.”
Ann Lysaght, a family member of one of Ms O’Farrell’s clients said she is “very reliable”.
“She is so kind and caring, and she’s careful with everything she does. She is just amazing.”
Catriona O’Mathuna, general manager of Dovida Cork North, said Ms O’Farrell supports “a wide range of clients with varying levels of dependency”.
“Through gentle guidance and encouragement, she supports their daily routines, promotes independence, and helps them feel secure and valued,” said Ms O’Mathuna.
“We are very lucky to have her on our team.”
