Works get underway on greenway in Cork
The rail line from Midleton to Youghal is set to become a greenway for walkers and cyclists.

Clearance works have begun on the Youghal to Midleton greenway after months of delays.

Site clearance operations will be based in Killeagh village near the old railway house where fences have been erected.

Cork East General Election Candidate, Cllr. James O'Connor has welcomed the commencement of works, which were due to get underway in late 2019.

“It’s fantastic because they’re expecting in the region of €11.6 million in revenue for the local economy will be derived from it on an annual basis once it’s fully operational. The quicker it’s done, the better,” he said.

The €15 million project will be joint funded by Cork County Council and The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

“For Mogeely and Killeagh it’s huge. With the exception of the wood in Killeagh there was no real public amenity that people could use for recreation and health. Mogeely village, in particular, was very much in need of support, so from Cork County Council’s point of view it is a fantastic day for East Cork,” Cllr O’Connor said.

“It is a game-changer in terms of tourism in the region and local businesses are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the area. East Cork has so much more to offer and the greenway will be the jewel in the crown of East Cork tourism for many years to come,” he added.
