A €1.9m design project to upgrade the Midleton to Carrigtwohill N25 was signed off this morning at County Hall.

It is estimated the scheme, which concerns a 7km strip of road, will cost up to €70m to bring to completion.

Speaking about the project Fine Gael Councillor Anthony Barry, who lives in Carrigtwohill, said that the N25 between Midleton and Carrigtwohill was one of the busiest roads in the country and badly needed upgrading.

“At the moment you have agricultural machinery and cars with direct access to the road, it is a complete disaster.”

Mr Barry pointed out there are numerous developments planned, including potentially 5,000 houses in the vicinity of the road, that needs to be catered for.

“You have local traffic mixed in and it needs to be filtered out," he said. "It would make it safer for individual houses and farms that are dotted alongside the road."

The project, which is expected to take 30 months to complete, was signed over to SWECO UK Limited who have been appointed as Technical Advisors to progress the scheme through phases one to four, from feasibility up to and including An Bord Pleanála planning process and CPO.

The appointed company SWECO UK Ltd is one of Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancies, offering qualified services in the fields of consulting engineering, environmental technology and architecture.
