Gardaí in Cork uncover €450 worth of suspected cannabis at checkpoint

Gardaí have uncovered €450 worth of suspected cannabis on the northside of Cork city.

Gurranabraher gardaí were carrying out a checkpoint at Upper Fair Hill under Operation Fanacht on Wednesday night when the suspected cannabis was handed over.

A car approached the checkpoint and gardaí got a smell of suspected cannabis. The driver handed over a bag containing €450 worth and a grinder.

A range of measures including a large number of static and rolling checkpoints and high visibility community engagement patrols were introduced by An Garda Síochána this morning.

The measures have been introduced to ensure compliance with public health guidelines and regulations following the Government’s decision to move to Level 5 under the Framework for Living with Covid-19.

Under Operation Fanacht, there will be an extensive network of checkpoints around the country which includes the 132 static checkpoints on motorways introduced earlier this month and hundreds of rolling checkpoints on main and secondary roads.

A total of 2,500 gardaí will be on duty at one time.

Training in the Garda College will be suspended for the next nine weeks except for specialist training activity and 125 attested garda trainees currently undertaking phase one training in the Garda College, 75 garda trainees not attested undertaking phase one training, 60 gardaí working as tutors instructors in the Garda College will be deployed from November 2.
